Smoking, Medications, & More: Factors That Worsen Sleep Apnea

If you have sleep apnea, then you might be looking for ways to get it under control. A professional treatment from your dentist can be an effective solution, but there are some lifestyle factors that can worsen this condition if you aren’t careful. To help make sure you can get restful nights you deserve, here are five things that can increase your symptoms and tips to stop any trouble.

1.) Weight Gain

Body weight is already a big contributor to sleep apnea, with about 70% of patients with it being obese. That’s because there are increased fat deposits around the neck that can block the upper airways, which is known as obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA. Not only that, but this condition can also lead to weight gain as your body isn’t able to regulate your hormones while you sleep as easily.

The best way to make sure you avoid this is by sticking to a balanced diet. Getting moderate exercise can also help you lose any extra weight and keep your body and immune system healthy and strong.

2.) Certain Medications

Some medications can relax the muscles in your throat and lead to more episodes of stopped breathing during the night. Painkillers (opioids in particular) and benzodiazepines are a few that can be culprits. That said, it’s important you don’t change or stop taking the medicine you need. Instead, talk to your physician about this side effect; that way, they can come up with a reliable solution.

3.) Alcohol

Similar to the above, alcohol can act like a muscle relaxant. If you tend to drink it before you go to bed, then you are more likely to experience an obstruction. Try your best to avoid these beverages in the evening or at least four hours before your bedtime. That way, you can ensure drinks like these can’t cause any trouble for you.

4.) Smoking

If you are a smoker, then OSA can be a problem. This habit can irritate your upper airway and cause inflammation in your gums and throat in some cases. As this happens, it may be narrowed or blocked. It might be best to quit smoking entirely, but reducing how often you partake can be helpful as well.

In the end, there are several lifestyle factors that can worsen your sleep apnea. Find out which ones are true for you and take steps against them. Pair it with professional treatment from your dentist, and you can be well on your way to rejuvenating rest.
